Analysing Photography


AIM: to aid YOUR understanding of the photographers/artists intention, and think more about the language you use when discuss photography.


Task 1- in groups select 4 areas to discuss about the photograph. Write down some observations in your group.

The Visual Content;
  • ·      Focal Point
  • ·      Foreground
  • ·      Symmetry
  • ·      Verticals or Horizontals
  • ·      Direction of Light
  • ·      Shape or Form
  • ·      Shadows
  • ·      Contrast
  • ·      Tonal Range- if the image is dark or light
  • ·      Atmosphere
  • ·      Recurring themes
  • ·      Patterns
  • ·      Composition or Framing- if the photographer has used a window or a doorway to frame the image.

Task 2- in your groups discuss ONE of the terms below. Write down some words that you have found.

Social/Cultural Context:
  • ·      Semiotics-the study of signs and symbols and their use of interpretation.
  • ·      Connotation- to imply or suggest
  • ·      Denotation- to signify or present
  • ·      The image location- any cultural implications
  • ·      Visual impact
  • ·      Does the image provoke a reaction?
